Regarding the unprecedented 11% increase in taxes for Amherst residents, the stated reason for “what people want” is simply not true. If people had the facts and choices of taking more money out of their pockets, at a time of economic crisis, in exchange for a mall that the town does not own and should not be involved; LED lights; a transformation of Westwood into an active amusement park. The belief and mantra was always for a passive park to preserve this beautiful, peaceful piece of nature with environmental and historical significance in central Amherst.
As leaders of Amherst and having a concern for the well-being of every citizen, at this trying time, what are the cuts that you have offered in your budget? The above is all discretionary spending that no one is clamoring for. Our future is today, not 10 years from now. You are taking the citizenry down a road of destruction for us and our children, both today and in the future.
