    Skepticism about Erie County’s new spending on the Sheriff’s Office is hardly surprising if only because, despite new hires, overtime is growing and twice the rate budgeted. Sheriff John Garcia says the problem will soon come under control although expert observers are doubtful.

    It's good to have advance warning, and that's what Erie County leaders have, thanks to Comptroller Kevin Hardwick. Like a sign that cautions about a new traffic light ahead, Hardwick has notified the Legislature of fiscal turbulence it is likely to encounter down the road.

    It is essential to examine all aspects of the response to this killer blizzard, of course. But it is also essential for public officials to be able to work collaboratively – together and with other stakeholders – to ensure the public is properly served during future emergencies. If they don't, New Yorkers will surely pay a price.
