In the Nov. 12 Viewpoints, Andrew Eastmond presents a compelling direction to answer the question, “Where are the responsible people when our politics needs them the most?”
Eastmond explains that responsible leaders must engage the reasonable majority of which I hope we are in addressing safeguarding democracy and the rule of law, safeguarding basic human rights throughout the world by having the U.S. play an indispensable role in protecting other democracies abroad, and to heed the reasonable majority’s demand for nationwide, sensible solutions to gun violence.
Probably a good number of people would not think these to be the priorities of a good leader. However, if you consider these to be the priorities of a good leader, and you believe the world looks to the positive examples set by the U.S., then join in efforts to reward such leaders and the structures that allow these leaders to win elections. Support ranked choice voting and nonpartisan primaries by joining groups such as retired Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s Country First and Heath Mayo’s Principles First. You will work with Democrats, Independents and Republicans committed to putting country over party and building on our long-standing shared civic ideals.

Kinzinger, who voted to impeach Trump after the January riots on the U.S. Capitol, left Congress with a passion to make a difference on a national level as he explains “that the answer to angry partisans isn’t more anger, but an upwelling of goodness. We must form small groups that affiliate with other small groups until they become part of a national movement that will not be ignored. This cannot be done in anger and it must include those with other views.”
